Hugo Claus was born in 1929 in Bruges. He made his debut in 1948 with the volume Register (Registreren). His novels, plays and poetry won many prizes. The sorrow of Belgium (Het verdriet van België, 1983), translated in French and German, is generally considered as his magnum opus.
Friday (Vrijdag 1969) is a sober, naturalistic domestic drama with a Christian subtext on the touchy subject of father/daughter incest. A man has committed adultery with his daughter. His wife has taken revenge with the family friend, with whom she has produced a child. To get beyond their sin and suffering, the infant´s parents must cleanse themselves through a series of personal revelations and literal washing. This will finally lead to a restoration of the previous order.
